Alexis’ Tunes: The Gift

Updated: Apr 9, 2024

One way that clients and I communicate with one another is through music.

The song "the Gift" by Seether really hits home for me as a song that represents the anguish and shame that comes from feeling unwell. As ya listen, may you feel a greater understanding of either yourself or someone else. You are not alone,

The Gift

Hold me now, I need to feel relief

Like I never wanted anything

I suppose I'll let this go and find a reason I'll hold on to

I'm so ashamed of defeat

And I'm out of reason to believe in me

I'm out of trying to get by

I'm so afraid of the gift you give me

I don't belong here and I'm not well

I'm so ashamed of the lie I'm living

Right on the wrong side of it all

I can't face myself when I wake up and look inside a mirror

I'm so ashamed of that thing

I suppose I'll let it go 'til I have something more to say for me

I'm so afraid of defeat

And I'm out of reason to believe in me

I'm out of trying to define

I'm so afraid of the gift you give me

I don't belong here and I'm not well

I'm so ashamed of the lie I'm living

Right on the wrong side of it all

Hold me now, I need to feel complete

Like I matter to the one I need

I'm so afraid of the gift you give me

I don't belong here and I'm not well

I'm so ashamed of the lie I'm living

Right on the wrong side of it all

Now I'm ashamed of this

I am so ashamed of this

Now I'm so ashamed of me

I am so ashamed of me

I acknowledge that the land on which I work and live is the traditional territory of the Indigenous peoples of Alberta, including the Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Nations, as well as the Métis Nation of Alberta. I honour the rich histories, languages, and cultures of these First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and their ongoing connection to this land. I strive to contribute to a future that respects and acknowledges the contributions and resilience of Indigenous individuals and their communities.
